CP Training Solutions is an accredited provider of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism Tier 2—the nationally recognised programme designed to improve the safety, quality, and accessibility of care for people with a learning disability and autistic people.

This one day, in person course provides health and social care staff with the essential knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to deliver high quality, person centred support. The training is named in honour of Oliver McGowan, whose story highlighted the urgent need for better understanding and improved practice across health and social care settings.

Course Structure

This Tier 2 training is delivered through a full day, face to face workshop and includes two core sessions:

1. Learning Disability Session (Morning)

Aim: Build a strong understanding of learning disabilities and best practice in health and social care, supported by current legislation.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise unconscious bias and prevent diagnostic overshadowing
  • Learn from LeDeR (Learning from Lives and Deaths Reviews)
  • Understand STOMP and STAMP campaigns
  • Apply the Equality Act 2010 and make reasonable adjustments
  • Use the Mental Capacity Act 2005 appropriately
  • Understand when DNACPR decisions may apply
  • Improve communication with individuals and families
  • Recognise the importance of hospital passports and annual health checks

2. Autism Session (Afternoon)

Aim: Deepen understanding of autism and learn how to create supportive, inclusive environments for autistic people.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand autism as an invisible condition
  • Reflect on personal values, beliefs, and assumptions
  • Recognise strengths and challenges experienced by autistic individuals
  • Identify triggers for anxiety and distress
  • Implement reasonable adjustments and adapt practice
  • Explore legislation and resources that support inclusive care

Pre Course Requirement

To attend Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Tier 2, all learners must first complete the free online Tier 1 eLearning course provided by Health Education England. This ensures participants arrive with the essential foundation needed to get the most from the face to face training.
